About this product

A workbook for getting a college personal statement out of your head and onto paper, built from the exercises used in our essay course and usable entirely on your own.

It is mostly blank. That is deliberate — the pages you fill are the product, and a book of advice you read once would not have helped.

The three stages

  1. Material — thirty structured prompts for mining an ordinary life, none of which ask what you are passionate about

  2. Drafting — a fast, deliberately bad complete draft, with space for exactly 900 words and a page that tells you to stop editing

  3. Cutting — the same draft rebuilt at 650, then at 500, then back to 650, which is the exercise that teaches what actually matters in it

The seven openings

A short section on the seven openings that appear in almost every application pile, with real examples of each. Not to shame anyone into avoiding them — several are overused precisely because they can work — but so you are choosing one rather than falling into it.

What it will not do

It will not give you a template, a structure to fill in, or twenty sample essays to imitate. Those exist and they produce essays that read like each other. Every exercise here starts from something only you have.

128 pages, half of them blank by design. Spiral bound so it opens flat and folds back on itself.

Kestrel logo Kestrel

Kestrel is an online school based in Denver, Colorado, teaching students across the United States and in more than thirty countries. We run small live sections and self-paced courses in AP and honors subjects, SAT and ACT preparation, college application writing, and academic English for international applicants. Live sections cap at sixteen students, every course is taught by a licensed teacher or a subject specialist rather than a rotating pool of tutors, and every recording, transcript and worked solution stays in your library for a full year. Sections run in three time zone bands, so a student in Seoul or Sao Paulo is never asked to sit a calculus class at three in the morning.
