Ninety free-response questions in the exam's own format, each with a rubric-applied model answer showing exactly where the six points live.

Assembled from the repeated-topic tally: every topic the exam has set since 2013, weighted by how often it has actually appeared. Some topics get eight questions here. Some get none, because they have never once been asked.

The data problem

More than half of AP Biology is interpreting something you have not seen before. So sixty of the ninety questions open with an unfamiliar graph or table drawn from real published work, and the first thing every model answer does is describe the data before explaining it — which is the habit that earns the first point almost every time.

What is in it

  • 90 free-response questions with full annotated model answers

  • The repeated-topic tally as a fold-out chart, updated to the most recent exam cycle

  • Six statistics clinics — chi-square, standard error, Hardy-Weinberg and water potential

  • A misconception appendix: roughly 140 specific wrong ideas, each with why it is tempting

  • Three full free-response sections, timed, for sitting cold

How to use it badly

By reading the model answers. They are written to be compared against your own attempt, and reading one first feels productive and teaches nothing. The solutions sit in a separate back section for exactly this reason.

The fold-out tally is on my wall. I stopped revising the whole book and started revising the eleven topics that keep coming back.

Aisha B., grade 12, Georgia

Kestrel logo Kestrel

Kestrel is an online school based in Denver, Colorado, teaching students across the United States and in more than thirty countries. We run small live sections and self-paced courses in AP and honors subjects, SAT and ACT preparation, college application writing, and academic English for international applicants. Live sections cap at sixteen students, every course is taught by a licensed teacher or a subject specialist rather than a rotating pool of tutors, and every recording, transcript and worked solution stays in your library for a full year. Sections run in three time zone bands, so a student in Seoul or Sao Paulo is never asked to sit a calculus class at three in the morning.
