About the course

Almost every student who tells us they are bad at science is describing a study-method problem in the vocabulary of talent. They read the chapter three times, felt like they knew it, sat the test and did not. That gap is not about ability. It is about the fact that recognising a page and being able to produce it from nothing are completely different skills, and only one of them is on the exam.

This course is free. Not free for a fortnight, not free until an upgrade appears — all six units, every worksheet and every worked solution cost $0 and will continue to. We run it because the students who need it most are usually the ones deciding, at fifteen, on a bad week, that science is not for them.

The one idea

Studying is not input. It is retrieval. Every technique here is a variation on the same move: close the book first, try to produce the answer, and only then check. It feels worse than re-reading and works substantially better, and the first unit is mostly about making peace with that.

What the six units cover

  • Retrieval and spacing — the two techniques with the strongest evidence behind them, and how to actually schedule them

  • Interleaving — mixing problem types so you practise choosing a method, which is the thing the test actually asks

  • Reading technical text — questions before paragraphs, diagrams before captions

  • Rebuilding rather than recalling — deriving the formula you forgot from the definition you remember

  • The error log — separating concept errors from method errors from arithmetic slips, because they need different fixes

  • The one-page summary — what to put on it, what to leave off, and when to write it

How each unit runs

  1. A short video, eight to twelve minutes, explaining one technique and the evidence for it

  2. A worked demonstration applying it to a real textbook section — usually chemistry or biology, chosen so no prior knowledge is needed

  3. A worksheet you do on paper, with the answers withheld until you mark your own attempt

  4. A five-question self-check that tells you whether the technique landed

There is no timetable and no attendance. Enrol today, start in March, restart in July — the sequence waits. Roughly a third of students take one unit, apply it for a month and come back for the next, which is a perfectly good way to do it.

Who this is for

Students moving into AP or honors coursework for the first time and expecting it to feel like more of the same, when it will not. Students in the middle of a course who are working hard and not moving. And students who did fine until the content outgrew the memorising.

It also works for parents who want to help and have not opened a science textbook in twenty years. Several thousand of our viewers are exactly that, and the worksheets are written so you can check an answer without the teacher.

Open the first unit and give it twenty minutes tonight. If by the end of the week you have closed a book before you felt ready and found out what you actually knew, it is working.

In this course you will be able to

Run a study session using retrieval and spacing instead of re-reading, and know why the swap works
Convert any textbook section into a set of questions before you start studying it
Rebuild a standard formula from its definition rather than recalling it, so a blank moment is survivable
Keep an error log that tells you whether you have a concept problem, a method problem or a speed problem
Estimate the size and units of an answer before solving, and catch roughly half your own mistakes that way
Write a one-page summary of a unit that is genuinely usable the night before a test
Ask a question in a way that gets a specific answer instead of a re-explanation

Prerequisite

Any student in grades 8 to 12 — there is no subject prerequisite at all
No prior physics, chemistry or biology is assumed; the examples are chosen to be readable without them
About ninety minutes a week for six weeks, though nothing expires if you take longer
A notebook. Genuinely nothing else
Willingness to be wrong out loud in the question thread, which is most of the method
