About the course

AP Physics 1 has one of the lowest pass rates of any AP exam, and the reason is not the content. The content is a first course in mechanics. The reason is that the exam asks you to explain, in writing, why something happens — and most students arrive having practised only how to compute what happens.

This course is built around that gap. Every unit ends with a written argument, not just a numerical answer, and the worked solutions show you the reasoning a grader is looking for alongside the algebra.

The order, and why it is this order

Units run in sequence and unlock in sequence. That is deliberate: energy makes very little sense before forces, and momentum is confusing until energy has landed. You can skip ahead in a flexible course and quietly build a hole. Here you cannot.

  1. Kinematics — motion described precisely, and graphs read as sentences

  2. Forces — free-body diagrams, Newton's laws, friction and connected systems

  3. Energy — work, the work-energy theorem, conservation and bar charts

  4. Momentum — impulse, conservation and collisions

  5. Rotation — torque, rotational inertia and angular momentum

  6. Oscillation — springs, pendulums and simple harmonic motion

  7. Exam craft — experimental design, paragraph arguments and timing

What is actually in it

  • Fifty-two recorded lessons, most between twelve and twenty minutes

  • A problem set per lesson, with a filmed solution for every question — not an answer key

  • Eight unit tests written to AP format and AP difficulty

  • Three full practice exams with both sections timed as on the day

  • Every released free-response question from the last eight cycles, sorted by topic

  • A rebuild sheet: every AP 1 equation derived from something more basic, so a blank moment is recoverable

The written-answer problem

About a third of your grade comes from explaining. AP graders reward a specific shape of argument: claim, physics principle, evidence, conclusion. It is learnable and almost nobody teaches it explicitly.

So every unit here ends with two or three paragraph-argument prompts, and the model answers are annotated to show which sentence earned which point. Students routinely tell us this section alone moved them a full grade.

I could do all the math and I was getting 3s on practice tests. Turned out I was writing two sentences where the rubric wanted four, and I had never seen a rubric. Fixed that in about three weeks. Got a 5.

In this course you will be able to

Draw a correct free-body diagram for any AP 1 situation, including inclines, pulleys and connected masses, before writing a single equation
Decide within thirty seconds whether a problem is a forces problem, an energy problem or a momentum problem — the single highest-leverage skill on this exam
Answer the qualitative-reasoning and paragraph-argument questions, which is where most otherwise-strong students lose the grade
Work a full free-response section in ninety minutes with time left to check units
Explain why a result is what it is, in writing, at the length AP graders reward
Handle rotational questions as the angular restatement of linear ones rather than as a separate subject
Score consistently on released free-response questions from the last eight exam cycles

Prerequisite

Currently taking AP Physics 1, or self-studying it for the May exam
Algebra II complete and comfortable — solving simultaneous equations, rearranging literal equations, basic trigonometry
No calculus. AP Physics 1 is algebra-based and this course keeps it that way
A scientific calculator and a notebook kept only for free-body diagrams
Four to six hours a week for twelve weeks, or a compressed six-week run if you are revising
