About the course

Units 5 through 9 are where AP Chemistry grades are decided. Everything before them is largely bookkeeping — count the particles, balance the equation, convert the units. Equilibrium is the first place the subject asks you to hold two competing processes in mind at once, and a very large number of students hit it having never been asked to think that way about anything.

This course covers only those units, and covers them slowly. It is not a survey of AP Chemistry. If you need units 1 to 4, take them elsewhere first — the prerequisites here are real.

Why equilibrium breaks people

Almost every early mistake comes from treating equilibrium as a state rather than a balance of two rates. Once you genuinely believe both reactions are still running, Le Chatelier stops being a rule to memorise and becomes something you can predict from first principles. Getting to that belief takes about two weeks and most courses allow two days.

The arc

  • Kinetics first — rates, rate laws, mechanisms — because equilibrium is a statement about rates

  • Equilibrium second — K, Q, ICE tables, Le Chatelier reasoned rather than recited

  • Acids and bases third — the same equilibrium mathematics with new vocabulary

  • Buffers and titration fourth — where acid-base equilibrium becomes something you can see on a curve

  • Solubility fifth — a short unit, mostly to prove the machinery generalises

  • Thermodynamics last — enthalpy, entropy, free energy, and the link back to K that ties the whole course together

How it is taught

  1. A concept lesson, twenty to thirty minutes, worked on a digital board with the derivation shown rather than stated

  2. A calculation clinic: eight to twelve problems solved in real time at the speed you should be working

  3. A problem set of twenty questions, mixing multiple choice with AP-style free response

  4. A written solution for every question, showing where the AP rubric awards each point

  5. A unit check of forty questions, auto-marked, with an explanation attached to every option including the wrong ones

Paying for it

The course can be paid in three monthly instalments at no extra cost — the full price, split, with access opening immediately on the first payment. Roughly half of the students on this course use it.

Who this is for

Students in AP Chemistry now who can feel unit 6 coming. Students who scored well on the first semester and then dropped, which is the single most common pattern we see. And students self-studying for the May exam who need the hard half taught properly rather than summarised.

It also suits first-year college general chemistry students, who meet the same material under a different name and usually at greater speed.


The kinetics unit opens as a free preview. If the mechanism lesson makes the rate-determining step feel obvious rather than arbitrary, this is the right course.

In this course you will be able to

Determine a rate law from initial-rate data and justify each exponent from the data rather than by inspection
Build and solve an ICE table, and state explicitly when the small-x approximation is legitimate
Predict the direction of an equilibrium shift and explain it in terms of Q against K, not by reciting Le Chatelier
Sketch a titration curve for any of the four acid-base combinations and mark the buffer region and equivalence point
Connect thermodynamics to equilibrium: derive the sign of ΔG from K and vice versa
Answer the long free-response questions that deliberately span kinetics, equilibrium and thermodynamics in one prompt
Design an experiment to measure a rate or an equilibrium constant, and identify its main source of error

Prerequisite

AP Chemistry in progress, or first-year general chemistry at college level
Units 1 to 5 already covered: atomic structure, bonding, stoichiometry and intermolecular forces
Logarithms fluently — pH work is unforgiving if logs are shaky
A scientific calculator, and comfort with scientific notation under time pressure
Roughly six hours a week; this is the densest quarter of the AP Chemistry syllabus
